Molecular phylogenetic study of the genus Colpodium sensu lato (Poaceae: Poeae)

Abstract: To study the relatives of two grasses carrying an unusual 2-chromosome genome, Zingeria biebersteiniana and Colpodium versicolor, we have studied the phylogeny relationships of Colpodium sensu lato species and some other grasses by analysis of ITS1 and ITS2 of nuclear rDNA. Z. biebersteiniana (2n = 4, x = 2), Z. trichopoda (2n = 8, x = 2), and C. versicolor (2n = 4, x = 2) form a well supported clade with a single species of Colpodium s. l. complex,Catabrosella araratica (2n = 42, x = 7). All other Colpodium s… Show more

“…In the nrDNA tree, they were together with Hyalopoa / Paracolpodium sister to a clade of Puccinellia / Sclerochloa and Coleanthus / Phippsia as similarly found in other studies (Fig. ) (Rodionov & al., ; Schneider & al., ; Soreng & al., ; Nosov & al., ). This suggests a reticulation process within Coleanthinae in way that the Puccinellia / Sclerochloa lineage has a hybrid background, namely Coleanthus / Phippsia ‐like nrDNA from its paternal ancestor while its maternal nrDNA from Catabrosa / Catabrosella was lost.…”

“…Nevskia. Later, we showed that this species is only distantly related to other species of the genus Catabrosella and differs from it in morphology, and therefore deserves to be separated into a new genus Nevskia [19,20]. Recently, Tkach et al came to a similar conclusion, proposing a new generic and specific name Hyalopodium araraticum (Lipsky) Röser & Tkach [33].…”

“…Despite this, Zingeria and Colpodium were included in the separate tribes Aveneae and Poeae, respectively [17]. Molecular phylogenetic studies have proven that Zingeria and Colpodium are closely related genera within the subtribe Coleanthinae of tribe Poeae [11,[18][19][20][21][22]. It was shown that another closely related to Zingeria taxon is Catabrosella araratica (Lipsky) Tzvelev [9,11,[18][19][20].…”

“…Total genomic DNA was isolated using the CTAB method (Doyle J.J., Doyle J.L., 1987), with minor modifications described previously (Rodionov et al, 2008). Amplification of the ITS region was performed using primers ITS 1P (Ridgway et al, 2003) and ITS 4 (White et al, 1990).…”
