Molecular-Level Processing of Conjugated Polymers. 3. Layer-by-Layer Manipulation of Polyaniline via Electrostatic Interactions

Abstract: Multilayer thin films comprised of sequentially adsorbed layers of partially doped polyaniline and a polyanion, sulfonated polystyrene, were fabricated via the use of a simple layer-by-layer molecular-level processing scheme. Using this simple multilayer polymer adsorption process, uniform thin films of polyaniline in the 40−600 Å thickness range were readily fabricated onto a variety of different substrates. Doping of these films with strong acids such as HCl and methane sulfonic acid results in electrically … Show more

“…118 These problems had traditionally been addressed through dispersing the polymer in solutions using a series of steps intended to remove aggregates and ensure a stable suspension. 119 More recently, template synthesis using polyanions and the synthesis of PANI nanostructures, most notably nanofibers, has enabled easy solution suspension for PANI. 67,118,120 Cycling stability has been addressed by combining PANI with carbon materials such as graphene or carbon nanotubes.…”

“…This method consists of the alternate deposition of polycation and polyanion layers on a solid substrate. [51][52][53][54] In addition to the simplicity of the preparation and the thickness control of the films, the most important advantage of the LbL technique is to enable the thorough interpenetration of polycation-polyanion layers. This feature gives rise to an improved interaction between polycation and polyanion, which may result in superior properties by the secondary doping of PANI and the enhancement of the electrochromic response.…”
