Molecular Insight into Gut Microbiota and Rheumatoid Arthritis

Abstract: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic, inflammatory, and autoimmune disorder. Gut microbiota play an important role in the etiology of RA. With the considerable progress made in next-generation sequencing techniques, the identified gut microbiota difference between RA patients and healthy individuals provides an updated overview of the association between gut microbiota and RA. We reviewed the reported correlation and underlying molecular mechanisms among gut microbiota, the immune system, and RA. It has bec… Show more

“…For example, studies reported that in the RA patients, the levels of opportunistic pathogens such as Enterobacterium and Staphylococcus were increased while reduced levels were observed for the strains such as Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Bacteroides [120]. Similarly, reduced Firmicutes/Bacteriodetes ratio has been reported in the intestinal microenvironment of patients with SLE [121]. Furthermore, studies were performed and it was found that probiotics interventions affect the various anti-inflammatory and immune-modulatory pathways by which various proteins like mucin, HSP-70, anti-inflammatory mediators have been released that help in the alleviation of the auto-immune disorders [122].…”

“…The interaction between the digestive tract microbes and the host is one of the factors which, to a great extent, determine the patient's condition [8,9]. The analyses carried out so far show that changes in gut microbiota composition account for many metabolic disorders, including obesity [10][11][12], inflammatory bowel diseases [13,14], rheumatoid arthritis [15,16] or type 2 diabetes [17,18]. The World Microbiome Project provided information on how race, place of residence, and diet affect gut microbiota composition [19].…”
