Molecular identification of species ofTaeniacausing bovine cysticercosis in Ethiopia

Abstract: Bovine cysticercosis causing damage to the beef industry is closely linked to human taeniasis due to Taenia saginata. In African countries, Taenia spp. from wildlife are also involved as possible sources of infections in livestock. To identify the aetiological agents of bovine cysticercosis in Ethiopia, cysticerci were collected from 41 cattle slaughtered in the eastern and central areas during 2010-2012. A single cysticercus per animal was subjected to the polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based DNA sequencing … Show more

“…These reports from Ethiopia are below the 30–60% suggested in developing countries ( Minozzo et al, 2002 ). However, Hailemariam et al (2014) confirmed 92.7% of 41 isolates as bovine cysticercosis using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. In Ethiopia, the rural communities mainly raise cattle under extensive husbandry practices.…”

“…CO1 is a universally accepted marker for the study of genetic variation and evolutionary biology of helminth parasites (Le et al 2000). Intraspecific variation in T. saginata has been investigated in several studies (Hailemariam et al 2013;Okamoto et al 2010), however, more studies using larger sample size are required to improve our understanding on the significance of genetic variation within this important taeniid species.…”

“…The complete mitochondrial genome of T. saginata has been determined in 2007 (Jeon et al 2007). Genetic characterization of T. saginata has been carried out in Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Thailand (Hailemariam et al 2013;Okamoto et al 2010). Molecular characterization in Iranian isolates of T. saginata has not been demonstrated so far.…”
