Molecular – genetic variance of RH blood group system within human population of Bosnia and Herzegovina

Abstract: There are two major theories for inheritance of Rh blood group system: Fisher - Race theory and Wiener theory. Aim of this study was identifying frequency of RHDCE alleles in Bosnian - Herzegovinian population and introduction of this method in screening for Rh phenotype in B&H since this type of analysis was not used for blood typing in B&H before. Rh blood group was typed by Polymerase Chain Reaction, using the protocols and primers previously established by other authors, then carrying out electrophoresis i… Show more

“…The five most important antigens from this blood group system are the D, C, c E and e since they are highly immunogenic. The C, c, E and e antigens are less immunogenic than the D antigen but can still cause immunogenic reactions [1]. The RH locus is bigenic consisting of the RHD and RHCE genes located on the short arm p34-36 of chromosome 1 with an order of 5'-RHD-3'-3'-RHCE-5'.…”

“…Serological typing is faster and is the first choice for routine testing but has its own limitations, such as testing is only done on red blood cells (RBC's), thus only the phenotype is known and reagents are sometimes costly [7,8]. In addition haemagglutination assays are not ideal for recently transfused patients, patients with autoantibodies and it cannot distinguish between different RHD variants [1,9]. In these cases serology techniques are difficult or impossible to carry out or else give inconclusive results, thus in Malta, the sample is referred abroad for genotyping.…”

“…Blood erythrocyte group antigens are the genetically strictly deterministic feature. In spite of resistant specific characteristics, the relevant hereditary factors within the ranges of species at the level of populations and individuals are characterized with rather high polymorphism [10] [11] [12] [13]. The Rhesus system consists of 49 defined antigens.…”

“…Bioanthropological research in Bosnia and Herzegovina began during the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the late 19th century, and the history of such research is presented in Lasic et al 2016. A number of bioanthropological and genetic studies have been performed in Bosnia and Herzegovina to assess the heterogeneity of local populations as well as the general B&H population (Berberovic 1969;Dogan et al 2016;Hadziselimovic 1981;Kapur-Pojskic et al 2014;Kovacevic et al 2013Kovacevic et al , 2014Lasic et al 2013Lasic et al , 2016Lasic et al , 2020Marjanovic et al 2005Marjanovic et al , 2005aMarjanovic et al , 2006Marjanovic et al , 2008Pojskic et al 2013). However, most of these works are based on molecular genetic markers, and a smaller part on phenotypic markers.…”
