Molecular cytogenetic analysis of monoecious hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) cultivars reveals its karyotype variations and sex chromosomes constitution

Abstract: Hemp (Cannabis sativa L., 2n = 20) is a dioecious plant. Sex expression is controlled by an X-to-autosome balance system consisting of the heteromorphic sex chromosomes XY for males and XX for females. Genetically monoecious hemp offers several agronomic advantages compared to the dioecious cultivars that are widely used in hemp cultivation. The male or female origin of monoecious maternal plants is unknown. Additionally, the sex chromosome composition of monoecious hemp forms remains unknown. In this study, w… Show more

“…These data also address a long-standing question regarding monoecious chromosome structures assessed by Razumova et al (Razumova et al 2016). Monoecious varietals (C3 and Fedora) cluster together in Figure 1 and the whole genome shotgun data clearly demonstrates an XX chromosome structure for monocieous samples thus further verifying earlier cytogenetic assessments.…”

“…The absence of a Y chromosome does not appear to be sufficient to ensure a total lack of production of male flowers (Faux et al, 2014;Menzel, 1964;Razumova et al, 2016). Some Cannabis plants are monoecious, producing both male and female flowers on the same plant (Menzel, 1964).…”

“…Sex expression in monoecious hemp is not as well understood as for dioecious plants, but it is believed to be a heritable trait present on the X chromosome or autosomes (Faux et al, 2014). It has also been suggested that the monoecious state originated from a small translocation from the Y chromosome, or by one or several mutated genes (Razumova et al, 2016).…”
