ABSTRACT:Cyanocarbons are organic compounds bearing enough cyano functional groups to significantly alter their chemical properties. For example, tetracyanoethylene forms a stable anion radical, is a strong acid, and readily substitutes its cyano groups. Tetracyanoethylene oxide reacts by addition across its carbon-carbon bond. Diazodicyanoimidazole cleaves nitrogen to form a superelectrophilic carbene, and pentacyanocyclopentadiene is about as acidic as perchloric acid. In this highlight, discovery-driven research that fanned out from tetracyanoethylene to a multiperson effort at DuPont on cyanocarbon chemistry is narrated.

Development and Validation of Selective Spectrophotometric Methods for the Determination of Pregabalin in Pharmaceutical Preparation

Three simple, quick and sensitive methods are described for the spectrophotometric determination of pregabalin (Pgb) in pharmaceutical preparations. Among them, the first two methods are based on the reaction of Pgb as n-electron donors with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) as π-acceptors to give highly colored complex species. The colored products were quantitated spectrophotometrically at 494 and 841 nm for DDQ and TCNQ, respectively. Optimization of the different experimental conditions was conducted. Beer's law was obeyed in the concentration ranges 2.0-30.0 and 1.5-10 µg•mL -1 for DDQ and TCNQ methods, respectively. The third method is based on the interaction of ninhydrin (NN) with primary amine present in the pregabaline. This reaction produces a blue coloured product in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) medium, which absorbs maximally at 573 nm. Beer's law was found in the concentration range 40.0-180.0 μg•mL -1 . The methods were applied successfully to the determination of this drug in pharmaceutical dosage forms.

The interaction of alkaloids with selected polyhaloquinone and polycyanoquinone n-acceptors was found to yield intensely coloured radical ions. This finding was developed into a sensitive spectrophotometric assay for alkaloids of general applicability and with adequate accuracy and precision. 7,7,8,8-Tetracyanoquinodimethane is used as the reagent. Anwendung von rr-Acceptoren zur quantitativen Analyse von AlkaloidenAkaloide geben mit rr-Acceptoren vom Typ der Polyhalogenchinone und Polycyanochinone intensiv gefirbte Radikal-Anionen. Auf Grund dieser Reaktion wurde eine allgemein anwendbare, empfindliche photometrische Bestimmungsmethode fur Alkaloide entwickelt, die auf der Umsetzung mit 7,7,8,8-Tetracyanochinondimethan beruht.n-Acceptors, such as tetracyanoethylene (TCNE), 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ), chloranil and 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanoquinone (DDQ) are known to yield charge-transfer complexes and radical ions with a variety of electron donors which include amines' -'). This donor-acceptor interaction has not been investigated hitherto for alkaloids as a group of n-electron donors which were recently demonstrated to participate in charge-transfer complexation with iodine4-'). Furthermore, relatively few previous publications concerned the analytical applications of this interaction, and were mainly centered on indoles and aromatic amines with TCNE'-'').
