Molecular characterization of poly(3-hexylthiophene)

Abstract: A complete molecular characterization of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) in dilute solution was conducted by using static and dynamic light scattering, gel permeation chromatography, and viscosity measurements. The dependence of the intrinsic viscosity and the radius of gyration upon molecular weight was determined in THF for 40 000 < Mw < 220 000 and found to be characteristic of a moderately good solvent. Similar solution characteristics were observed in chloroform. A comparison of the macromolecular dimension… Show more

“…We also observe a slight decrease of the specific viscosity of the solution from 0.52 to 0.40 after treating the solution (Figure 1b), confirming a reduction of the chain entanglements in solution. These results, combined with prior analysis by dynamic light scattering, 13,47 paint the pictures of the pristine and disentangled solutions illustrated in …”

“…If P3HT is deposited by spin-coating, the best solvent is chloroform, due to its rapid evaporation which limits crystallization during the spin-coating process [79,80]; this impose a thermal post-treatment process able to favor crystallization and π−π stacking of the P3HT backbone. It has been shown that this results in a lamellar structure formed by interchain stacking ( Figure 5).…”

“…ASTRA V software, version 5.3.4.16 (Wyatt Technology), was used for data analysis. The values of the refractive index increment, dn/dc, using THF as the mobile phase were determined after injecting a known amount of polymer: PMMA dn/dc = 0.088 [31], P3HT dn/dc = 0.285 [32], and MEH-PPV dn/dc = 0.293; when possible, these values have been confirmed from the literature. GPC samples were measured within one day after removal from vacuum.…”
