Molecular characterization of coxsackievirus B5 isolates

Abstract: Coxsackie B viruses of serotype 5 are associated frequently with sporadic cases of neurological diseases, epidemics of meningitis, and chronic diseases such as cardiomyopathy and diabetes. In this article, 15 strains of Coxsackievirus B5 isolated from patients with neurological disorders and healthy people were investigated by partial sequencing in the 5' half of the VP1 region and compared to other published sequences of Coxsackievirus B5, in the same genomic region. All Coxsackievirus B5 sequences showed les… Show more

“…Previous studies have provided some insight into the genetic diversity within the CVB5 serotype (50,80,93). In the present study, an ML approach was applied to extend previous studies and to analyze the global genetic diversity among contemporary CVB5 isolates collected over a 25-year period.…”

“…Polioviruses were identified by the presence of a cytopathic effect (CPE) on L20B cell lines; they were then serotyped and intratyped by real-time PCR (16). Nonpolio enteroviruses were identified by the presence of a CPE on RD and/or Hep2-C cells and typed by partial sequencing in the VP1 gene as described previously (25).…”

“…NPEV can also be responsible for acute flaccid paralysis, a syndrome that mimics poliomyelitis. In Europe, 84 NPEV associated cases were registered in 2005 by the Polio Lab Network (3).Enteroviruses have a positive single-stranded RNA genome subjected to high mutation rates and frequent genetic recombination events (1, 17, 30-33, 37, 46-48, 58, 60, 61) and thereby display a great diversity (10,41,52,55,59). More than 90 serotypes have been characterized among the human enteroviruses (HEVs), but only 68 are recognized in the current taxonomy (62).…”
