Molecular Characterization and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Human Brucella in Northeast China

Abstract: Background Brucella is a widespread and highly pathogenic bacteria that poses serious threats to public health and animal husbandry. The aim of this study was to identify the characteristics of Brucella spp. in Northeast China, to determine their antimicrobial resistance, and to preliminarily analyze the resistance mechanism. Methods In this study, 61 Brucella isolates were identified by abortus-melitensis-ovis-suis polymerase chain reaction, and epidemic potential was clarified by multi-locus sequence anal… Show more

“…Tetracycline, streptomycin, and other medications with teratogenic potential are not recommended for treating children below 8 years of age, patients with co-morbidities and pregnant women. In these vulnerable groups, rifampicin and third-generation cephalosporins are recommended to treat brucellosis [89].…”

“…TMP-SMX exhibits acceptable in vitro activity, suitable tissue, and intracellular penetration. Nevertheless, it is only recommended to treat pregnant patients and children younger than 8 years [89]. In addition, streptomycin, an aminoglycoside medication, can be used to treat brucellosis in addition to tetracycline or doxycycline.…”
