“…Stimulation of cultured chicken vaginal cells with S. enteriditis or LPS increased levels of AvBD1 to -3 within 24 h. The importance of bdefensins in the protection of the mammalian male and female reproductive tracts is well established. Abundant expression of multiple b-defensin genes in the male (Palladino et al, 2003;Patil et al, 2005;Sang et al, 2005Sang et al, , 2006Yamamoto and Matsui, 2002) and female (Aono et al, 2006;Quayle et al, 1998;Valore et al, 1998) reproductive tracts has been reported. The male reproductive system is largely devoid of an adaptive immune system and is therefore depending on an effective innate immune system to prevent infection that may affect temporary or permanent fertility (Patil et al, 2005).…”

“…Another study showed the presence of transcripts of LAP, TAP, in bovine uterus -in endometrial epithelial cells treated with E. coli LPS, as well as the LAP and TAP transcripts in uterine stromal cells (Davies et al, 2008). Aono et al (2006) compared the gene structure and amino-acid sequence of bovine beta-defensin 1 (BBD-1) with its human counterpart (hBD-1) and with other bovine beta-defensins. They showed that bovine BD-1 gene has one long intron, as large as the intron of the human gene (8547 bp in hBD-1 vs. 6962 in BBD-1), about five-fold longer then introns of other known bovine beta-defensin genes.…”

“…Βο ινε β-δεφενσιν 1 Aono et al (2006) identified a novel β-defensin that showed more similarity to human β-defensin than to other bovine β-defensins and named it as bovine β-defensin 1gene (bBD1). It containstwo exons and one large intron, which resulted in 69 amino acids propeptide.…”
