Molecular analysis of oral bacteria in dental biofilm and atherosclerotic plaques of patients with vascular disease

Abstract: SM was found at a high frequency in oral and vascular samples, even in edentulous patients, and its presence in atherosclerotic plaques suggests the possible involvement of this bacterium in the disease progression.

“…This corresponds with findings showing periodontal infections to be risk factors for stroke, 47,48 and that S. mutans is detected in 100% of samples of atherosclerotic plaques. 49 S. mutans is a major pathogen in dental caries that can cause bacteremia by dental procedures, such as tooth extraction and periodontal surgery, or even tooth brushing in daily life. 50 The hemorrhage-causing S. mutans strains express collagen-binding proteins on their cell surface, enabling them to attach effectively to exposed …”

“…A diverse range of oral bacterial pathogens and bacterial DNA have been detected in atherosclerotic plaque. 15,16 In animal models, infection with Porphyromonas gingivalis increases atherosclerotic plaque volume with the accumulation of cholesterol esters and inflammatory mediators. 17 In humans, serum IgA antibodies to P gingivalis are higher in patients with myocardial infarction than in controls.…”

“…These and other studies suggest that a multitude of bacterial species may contribute to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis [55e57]. It is interesting to note that the detection of bacteria associated with the oral cavity is not limited to pathogens associated with severe states of oral diseases, like P. gingivalis, but was also reported for bacteria that are associated generally speaking with increased amounts of dental plaque on tooth surfaces, like streptococci [58].…”
