Moisture Absorption and its Effects on the Performance of Printed Circuit Materials

Abstract: Polymers have found wide usage in microelectronics industry. Their moisture absorption properties cause the concern of reliability without hermeticity (RwoH). For printed circuit packages, the lamination process, the components assembly, and the field performance of final product are strongly influenced by the presence of high level moisture content. For instance, moisture is an important factor in the development of internal shorts through metal migration when printed circuit package is in service. Moisture c… Show more

“…To examine the fitting effect of the humidity threshold model to the experimental data, residual analysis is necessary before the fitting model applies to the practical engineering. Because normalei=μitrueμ^i is the difference between measured value μ i and fitting value μtrue^i, e i can be treated as random error of ε i . Then the rationality of the humidity threshold model is proved by the characters of residual error.…”

“…It is proved that points (q ( i ) ,e ( i ) ) are supposed to be in a line if e ( i ) [the subscript ( i ) stands for i th number of e ( i ) in an ordered list from smallest to largest] comes from normal distribution population, where q ( i ) is the expectation of e ( i ). The value of q ( i ) can be calculated by the equation q()i=italicMSE×φi0.5n, where MSE=1npi=1nei2, φnormali0.5n is the lower fractile of a standard normal distribution, which can be obtained by looking for in the Handbook of Table for Reliability Test . Then, the results of residual error and the normal probability are shown in Table and Figure .…”

“…Moisture can instigate corrosion of copper traces or inflict damage on the substrate material, thereby affecting the PCB's electrical properties. [63,64] Additionally, moisture elevates the dielectric constant, curtailing the circuit switching speed and augmenting propagation delay time. [65,66] Particularly, moisture permeating the substrate can stimulate ionic corrosion, resulting in open and short circuits.…”
