Mohs Surgery Is the Treatment of Choice for Recurrent (Previously Treated) Basal Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: We reviewed all studies (since 1945) reporting recurrence rates for treatment of recurrent (previously treated) basal cell carcinomas (BCC) using surgical excision, radiotherapy, cryotherapy, curettage and electrodesiccation, and Mohs micrographic surgery. The 5-year recurrence rate for Mohs micrographic surgery is 5.6%. The recurrence rate for non-Mohs modalities of 19.9% is nearly four times higher. Individual recurrence rates for the non-Mohs modalities are 17.4% for surgical excision, 40.0% for curettage a… Show more

“…8 The reported recurrence rate in current literature is 1-3% in pBCC and 5-7% for rBCC. [8][9][10] Our incidence of 0.26% with pBCC improves on this. Table 3 showed recurrence rates of previous studies that have 5 years follow-up results.…”

“…In systematic reviews of the literature dating back to the 1940s, Rowe et al, reported 5-year recurrence rates for MMS of 1% and 5.6% for primary and recurrent BCC, respectively. 42,43 In comparison, recurrence rates for other treatment modalities, including standard excision, C&E, radiation therapy, and cryosurgery ranged from 7.5% to 10.1% and from 9.8% to 40% for primary and recurrent BCC, respectively. The first RCT for MMS comparing MMS with standard excision of primary and recurrent facial BCC was conducted in the Netherlands.…”

“…Positive margins on dura mater and the mastoid bone required adjuvant radiotherapy. [16,17]. Exceeding the advantages, it is timeconsuming and costs are greatly higher than classic excision [6].…”
