Mohs Micrographic Surgery for Cutaneous Lymphadenoma

Abstract: Cutaneous lymphadenoma clinically present as pink papules or plaques resembling a basal cell carcinoma on the head and neck of young adults. Surgical excision is the treatment for these benign tumors. Cutaneous lymphadenoma may occur in an anatomically sensitive area, where margin control and conservative excision are indicated. Although not previously described in the literature, Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is a treatment option for cutaneous lymphadenoma. We present a series of three individuals with cut… Show more

“…Successful management by Mohs micros-graphic sugery (MMS) has been reported in several cases. 11 According to Lo Piccolo et al, 12 MMS may allow for more definitive tumor removal for large cases of cutaneous lymphadenoma and greater tissue preservation at sites that are functionally and aesthetically-sensitive ( i.e ., the face). Simple surgical reexcision may be sufficient and preferred in the case of microscopically positive surgical margins, given the resource-intense and time-consuming nature of MMS.…”

“… 6 One patient synchronously had CL on the right cheek and syringoid eccrine carcinoma on the scalp. 7 Most of the patients had surgery excision without recurrence, four patients received MMS, 8 , 9 one patient had shave excision and reoccurred, 10 one patient metastasized in regional lymph nodes. 5 Two patients had congenital CL, 6 , 11 (see Table 1 ).…”

“…CL, on the other hand, is a rare, benign epithelial tumor . Because of sufficient uncertainty in diagnosis of CL, both are commonly treated with Mohs surgery . Given that CL is a benign neoplasm, reasons for use of Mohs micrographic surgery warrant examination.…”

“…8 Because of sufficient uncertainty in diagnosis of CL, both are commonly treated with Mohs surgery. 15,16 Given that CL is a benign neoplasm, reasons for use of Mohs micrographic surgery warrant examination. The reasons vary from case to case, some because of the concern that CL might undergo malignant transformation, 16 and some because the lesions are large and in cosmetically sensitive areas.…”
