MOF-derived PdNiCo alloys encapsulated in nitrogen-doped graphene for robust hydrogen evolution reactions

Abstract: The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is an important step for electrochemical water splitting to produce hydrogen. Functional materials with low cost and robust performance might meet the urgent need of...

“…To elucidate the reaction kinetics, Tafel plots derived from the LSV curves were performed (Figure 8b). The electrode of 1 wt% Fe 3 O 4 /CNS possesses a far lower Tafel slope of 76.4 mV dec −1 in comparison with the counterparts larger than 130 mV dec −1 , indicating the catalytic kinetics of an HER should be guided by the Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanistic pathway with the Heyrovsky step determined as the rate-determining step [23]. To obtain deeper insight into the HER catalytic activity of the above electrode, we examined the electrode kinetics using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).…”

“…Three different approaches to the design of MOF-based HER catalysts have been explored: (1) mimicking the active sites of natural HER catalysts, (2) optimizing the precious metal loading in MOF-derived composites, and (3) fabricating MOF-derived catalysts based on inexpensive and earth-abundant components . Strategies of the second type have been implemented using a wide variety of precious metal-containing MOF/graphene hybrids, and systems containing Pt, Pd, , and Ru have all shown good activity in the HER. Strategies of the third kind make use of materials containing nonprecious metals, particularly Ni, Fe, Cu, Mo, and Co, as low-cost HER catalysts.…”

“…Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can be directly annealed to prepare a rich variety of alloy particles loaded with carbon materials. 39,40 In MOF, multifarious transition metal nodes are present, such as Fe, Co, Ni, and Zn, with linker groups of 2-MeIM, 41 CN, 42 H 3 BTC, 43 POM, 35 etc . During annealing in an inert atmosphere, the metal atoms in MOF are reduced to metal by C in the linker and aggregate to form alloy nanoparticles under the action of surface energy.…”
