Modulatory Effect of Acupuncture on the Cardiovascular System: A Cross-Over Study

Abstract: The effect of acupuncture on the cardiovascular system was studied in 23 healthy males in a cross-over design comparing acupuncture and a placebo pill by measuring skin blood flow and the function of the heart. Acupuncture was found to have a modulatory effect on skin blood flow (correlation coefficient (r) = -0.68; p < 0.0005) and heart rate (r = -0.56; p < 0.005), as well as Blood-Pressure-Heart-Rate-Product (r = -0.70; p < 0.0002). The combination of rest and a placebo pill had no modulatory effect on skin … Show more

“…The results of their study suggest that electroacupuncture shows more similarity to the e#ects achieved by injecting the sensory neurotransmitters SP or CGRP into the flap than to the e#ects of blocking the sympathetic vasoconstrictor neurons. In healthy volunteers, Ballegard et al [13] evaluated the modulatory e#ects of electroacupuncture on the cardiovascular system using a placebo-pill (vitamin pill) controlled, crossover study with 23 male students. As in the present study, needles were left in place, but stimulated electrically for 20 min, using di#erent acupoints (Hegu and Shousanli).…”

“…Electroacupuncture, needle acupuncture and moxibustion are common forms of treatment in TCM. In humans, LDF was used to detect changes in the microvascular flow of the skin in a placebo-pill controlled cross-over study in healthy males due to electroacupuncture [13], of the skin over the parotid region due to needle or electroacupuncture in patients with Sjö gren's syndrome [14], and of tender points in fibromyalgia patients due to needle acupuncture [15].…”

“…Previous studies of the physiological response to acupuncture have used, in part, heart rate (HR) and non-invasive (measurement of) blood pressure (NIBP). [18][19][20][21] Others have used invasive measures such as microelectrode implant in muscle or repeated blood sampling. Ballegaard also used the derived pressure rate product (PRP) as an outcome measure of cardiac workload, which Wright et al had demonstrated to be a sensitive assessment for even small cardiac workloads.…”
