DevOps originated in the context of the agile development aims to enable the continuous deployment of software applications in small releases. Most recently, organizations are taking a significant interest in adopting DevOps for automatically deploying IoT applications to multi-cloud. The interest is there; however, the challenge is how to achieve this. A new DevOps reference architecture (DRA) framework has been iteratively developed to address this challenge. This paper presents the updated DRA framework and its empirical evaluation results. The empirical evaluation is composed of two phases: (1) industry case study evaluation conducted in an IT organization, and (2) industry field survey with a cohort of experts in software engineering. The evaluation aims to determine the applicability and novelty of the DRA framework. The evaluation results indicate that the DRA is fit for its intended purpose and is expected to help both researchers and practitioners. The DRA uses can architect complex design models for the purpose of supporting the automated development stage of software applications. Software engineers can implement the DRA models for deploying complex IoT application to the multi-cloud environment in the current organization development parameters.

This article presents the novel Python, C# and JavaScript libraries of Node Primitives (NEP), a high-level, open, distributed, and component-based framework designed to enable easy development of cross-platform software architectures. NEP is built on top of low-level, high-performance and robust sockets libraries (ZeroMQ and Nanomsg) and robot middlewares (ROS 1 and ROS 2). This enables platform-independent development of Human–Robot Interaction (HRI) software architectures. We show minimal code examples for enabling Publish/Subscribe communication between Internet of Things (IoT) and Robotics modules. Two user cases performed outside laboratories are briefly described in order to prove the technological feasibility of NEP for developing real-world applications. The first user case briefly shows the potential of using NEP for enabling the creation of End-User Development (EUD) interfaces for IoT-aided Human–Robot Interaction. The second user case briefly describes a software architecture integrating state-of-art sensory devices, deep learning perceptual modules, and a ROS -based humanoid robot to enable IoT-aided HRI in a public space. Finally, a comparative study showed better latency results of NEP over a popular state-of-art tool (ROS using rosbridge) for connecting different nodes executed in local-host and local area network (LAN).

competitiveness in the aircraft manufacturing industry requires continuous improvement and modernization of its manufacturing processes, in order to keep the companies competitive in the market. In this context, the use of advanced manufacturing technologies and systems has been incessantly pursued to achieve productivity gains, sustainability and reduction of production costs, as well as being important in the individuals’ quality of life. Autonomous robotic systems such as Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) have been used on shop floor to assist the aggregation of these competitive advantages to the business. Coupled to the use of these vehicles, other technologies such as the internet, digital factory and cloud-computing have been integrated into manufacturing in direction of the so-called advanced manufacturing, or Industry 4.0. Thus, this work aims to apply the concepts of digital factory in an example of aircraft manufacturing system, to analyze the efficiency and workload of the AGVs that transport materials from the warehouse to the assembly stations. Based on a theoretical approach by discrete-event simulation method and guided by the principles of Industry 4.0, analysis related to needed amount of AGVs, cycle times, deliveries and downtime of the vehicles were performed for different situations. Thus, it searches for better results in terms of productivity and decision-making support regarding adding-value related to materials transporting and information over long distances, delays, waiting and unnecessary movement of workers, in order to obtain improvement and profits for the aircraft manufacturing system.
