Postconsumer solid waste has received wide attention in the development of raw materials for innovative products. In this paper, waste polystyrene (WPS) foam was employed as a starting material to react with 3,3′,4,4′-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) to synthesize a series of hyper-cross-linked polymers (HPB-s). The maximum adsorption capacities of the hyper-cross-linked adsorbents were 3082.2 and 3279.4 mg g–1 for malachite green (MG) and safranine T, respectively. The kinetics and isotherms were more consistent with the pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models, and the thermodynamic data indicated that the adsorption process was heat-absorbing and spontaneous. Furthermore, HPB-2 still maintained a complete shape and a high adsorption capacity after five adsorption–desorption cycles. More importantly, the adsorption studies for three binary mixed dye systems showed that HPB-2 exhibited efficient and selective adsorption behavior toward cationic dyes from water. The present work demonstrates that HPB-2 has promising potential in purifying dye wastewater.

Phenanthrene, a prime polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollutant, is utilized to develop a nanoporous hypercrosslinked polymeric adsorbent (poly-PHEN-C) through the microwave-assisted process from catalyst anhydrous AlCl 3 and solvent CHCl 3 . Nanoporous poly-PHEN-C proves to be a highly effective adsorbent for adsorbing CO 2 from flue gas and removing organic dyes from wastewater. CO 2 capture capacity of 3.2 mmol g −1 at 298 K and 1 bar is ascribed to the combined effect of surface area (1472 m 2 g −1 ), micropores (1.1, 1.7 nm), pore volume (0.73 cm 3 g −1 ), and π electrons. The separation selectivity of the gas mixture, i.e., CO 2 /N 2 (15:85), is estimated from the ideal adsorbed solution theory model. Moreover, poly-PHEN-C is employed for removal of cationic (crystal violet, CV) and anionic (alizarin red S, ARS) dyes from aqueous solutions. In the batch process, it exhibits adsorption capacities of 161 mg g −1 for CV and 120 mg g −1 for ARS. In the continuous fixed-bed column process, breakthrough capacity of 300 mg g −1 is achieved for CV. Thus, the present study offers an eco-friendly approach for effectively managing three categories of hazardous pollutants, namely, PAHs, greenhouse gas CO 2 , and organic dyes, a sustainable strategy for environmental management.

BackgroundBiobased hydrogels are used in many applications due to their easy availability, low cost and versatility to acquire different structures. However, there is scarce information about the changes generated in the matrix's microstructure after crosslinking reactions. The effect of the crosslinking reaction using glutaraldehyde on the micro and macrostructure of tragacanth gum hydrogels (TG GLU) was evaluated.ResultsNew acetal groups, that increase with increasing GLU, produced less packed biopolymeric structures with more thermal stability. Due to demethoxylation, a higher amount of free carboxylic groups after crosslinking reaction were determined in TG GLU. Crosslinked hydrogels presented a higher water uptake capacity with a pH responsive behavior with suitable thermal and mechanical properties. Besides, the highest adsorptive capacity of methylene blue achieved was qm=530 mg/g.ConclusionspH responsible gels from tragacanth were obtained after crosslinking with glutaraldehyde. Chemical and microstructural changes affect the Methylene Blue adsorption, resulting in hydrogels with improved adsorptive properties. These properties give the TG‐GLU hydrogels some features that make them suitable for practical applications related to the pharmaceutical industry for drug delivery and water remediation.This article is protected by copyright.
