Resumo: Este artigo tem a intenção de divulgar e apresentar a inserção da área ou da cadeia produtiva de Compósitos Poliméricos com Fibras Vegetais Naturais dentro do contexto do Projeto Fênix Amazônico. Duas frentes de pesquisa e desenvolvimento na área de compósitos de polímeros com fibras naturais vegetais são propostas: uma que trabalharia com sistemas de produção com maquinário relativamente barato e simples, para que as comunidades rurais da Amazônia pudessem absorver tal tecnologia; uma outra frente para desenvolver materiais compósitos com tecnologia de fabricação mais avançada. Deste modo esperamos despertar o interesse da comunidade científica e tecnológica das mais diversas áreas em colaborar com o desenvolvimento de novas tecnologias que possam ser utilizadas para a recuperação de áreas degradadas da Amazônia. Two research and development fields based on polymeric composites with natural vegetable fibers are proposed: the first one considers production systems with simple, cheap machinery to facilitate technology assimilation by rural communities in the Amazon; the second one aims at developing composite materials with advanced production technology. It is hoped to raise awareness for scientific and technological development for the recovery of degraded areas in Amazon.

Abstract. In order to improve the poor interfacial adhesion of the kenaf fiber and polystyrene (PS) in their composite material, the surface of the kenaf fiber was modified using a synthesized polymeric coupling agent to promote adhesion with PS matrix. The dynamic thermo-mechanical properties of the composite composed of modified kenaf fiber and PS were also investigated. The polymeric coupling agent treatment of the kenaf fiber increased the fiber-matrix interaction through a condensation reaction between alkoxysilane and hydroxyl groups of kenaf cellulose. DMA (Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis) results showed that the modified fiber composites have higher E′ and lower tanδ than those with untreated fiber indicating that a greater interfacial interaction between the matrix resin and the fiber. It was also found that the storage modulus increases in proportion with the Si/C ratio on the fiber surface.

The Sustainable Environment Research Center of National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan has set up a treatment plant to dispose of laboratory waste. In the treatment process, the residue from the incineration system and the physical and chemical system is vitrified by a plasma melting system. Part 1 of this study described the treatment path of metals during vitrification. In Part 2, plasma vitrified slag is reused by using a molding technology. Unsaturated polyester resin and glass fiber were used as the molding material and additive, respectively, in the molding process. With an appropriate mixing ratio of unsaturated polyester resin, glass fiber, and slag, the physical properties of composites improved, and the ultimate tensile strength reached 17.6 MPa. However, an excess amount of slag reduced the strength and even retarded the production of composites. Differential thermal analysis and the water bathing test results show that the composite decomposed at 80°C and that it vaporized at 187°C. Although the unsaturated polyester resin decomposed, the metal encapsulated in the slag did not leach out. The results show that the reuse of slag using molding technology should be taken into consideration.
