Modified Phase-Shifted PWM Scheme for Reliability Improvement in Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel Inverters

Abstract: The cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (CHMI) is a modular structure that consists of many power semiconductor switches. With this increase in the number of power semiconductor switches, it is hard to predict and handle the failure of the devices, and hence reliability of CHMI decreases. The major cause of power semiconductor switch failure is junction temperature that is produced by power losses. The study proposes a multi-carrier pulse-width modulation (PWM) scheme for reduction in switching losses of CHM… Show more

“…The main work of the pump is to suck the water from the sea. This process can be done by both open and closed loop system [22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30]. The developed system also reduces the THD as illustrated in Figures 14 and 15.…”

“…The advantages of MLI include stepped output voltage resembling a sinusoidal wave [2]. Staircase output voltage waveform generated by the MLI lowers the harmonics and improves power quality [3]. The higher the level in the output voltage, the lower is the total harmonic distortion and, consequently, the losses associated with lower order harmonics in applications such as drives [4], [5].…”

“…At any instant of time, twelve switches are in ON state. This increases conduction losses considerably [3]. Assuming 0.5 volts drop across each switch, 12 switches during operation cause a drop of 6 volts and consequently, the power loss is quite high under higher current operation.…”

“…The clamping period, however, is assigned to a specific Hbridge leg and thus the power losses are not distributed evenly. In [19], a novel sinusoidal PWM (SPWM) was proposed and this method also adopted the clamping period. The reference signal for modulation is formed by mixing the sinusoidal wave and clamping period with rotation scheme.…”
