Modifications of dietary flavonoids towards improved bioactivity: An update on structure–activity relationship

Abstract: Over the past two decades, extensive studies have revealed that inflammation represents a major risk factor for various human diseases. Chronic inflammatory responses predispose to pathological progression of chronic illnesses featured with penetration of inflammatory cells, dysregulation of cellular signaling, excessive generation of cytokines, and loss of barrier function. Hence, the suppression of inflammation has the potential to delay, prevent, and to treat chronic diseases. Flavonoids, which are widely d… Show more

“…Many flavonoids, especially flavonols, have been isolated from ferns and characterized (Harborne and Williams 1988;Cao et al 2013a, b). Flavonoids are abundant in Pteris species, and epidemiological and medical data suggest that they play key roles in preventing and managing diseases Xiao and Kai 2012;Xia et al 2014;Xiao et al 2016;Chen et al 2017;Xiao 2016c). Flavonoids from 20 fern species belonging to the genus Pteris have been studied (Gong et al 2007;Chen et al 2007).…”

“…Quercetin 3‐ O ‐galactopyranoside, quercetin 3‐ O ‐rhamnopyranoside, quercetin 3‐ O ‐arabinopyranoside and myrisetin 3‐ O ‐glucoside were also confirmed as potential anti‐inflammatory agents (Mothana et al, ). In addition, orientin with 8‐ C‐ glucoside have been proved to possess a higher anti‐inflammatory capacity than isoorientin with 6‐ C ‐glucoside both in vitro and in vivo (Chen et al, ).…”
