Modification of the potential production capabilities of agricultural terrace soils due to historical cultivation in the Budina cadastral area, Slovakia

Abstract: The soil production attributes of historical agrarian terraced fields were examined in the Budina cadastral area of the Ostrozky Mountains. This landscape represents a unique sub-mountainous Carpathian landscape with farms that use a historically preserved triple-field agricultural system. We determined the geo-spatial parameters of different types of land cover and terraces using geographic information systems. The soil depth was measured in the field, and the skeleton content was determined in the laboratory… Show more

“…For example in hilly regions the most common and traditional form of productive agricultural land are terraces, with small plots of land [6], [7]. In some cases terraces are newly formed in modern times for specific needs in agricultural production for example new vineyards planted 280 The Institute of Agriculture and Tourism, K. Hugues 8, 52440 Poreč, Croatia T [8].…”

“…However, only if they are properly registered and we know that they exist. Therefore, it is important to note that the recommended potential land use based on the official national classification of basic soil ecological units, which intend to predict optimal land use for a particular unit of the soil, does not provide relevant information on soil quality on terraces (Slámová et al 2015). The authors noted that the soil on the terraces has qualitatively different attributes than the soil on un-terraced slopes, but classification does not recognize the soil on terraces.…”
