Small and medium-sized companies make up approximately 99.9 % of the total number of all companies in Slovakia. Developing these companies is an essential prerequisite for significant economic growth in our country. The paper's primary goal is to analyse the development of assets and capital of small and medium-sized companies in viticulture in Slovakia. The monitored period was 2013-2021, and the forecast of the indicator's development until 2024. Viticulture in Slovakia has a long-term tradition not only of growing vines but also of wine production. In the analysed wineries, the value of assets and their basic components (non-current assets, current assets, and accruals) grew. We noticed the same trend in the development of equity and liabilities and its items (equity, liabilities, and accruals). Wineries mainly used debt to finance their activities, which prevailed over equity.

Stone mounds and walls as a relict of traditional viticultural landscape (case study Modra area, Slovakia) Stone mounds and walls are defined as the man-made accumulations of the unnecessary skeletal material accumulated over centuries as by-products of vineyards cultivation usually at the borders of plots. Their distribution, position, shapes and volume are analyzed; the basic types are defined and causes of their disappearance and transformation are interpreted relying on the comparison of situations in 1894 and 2018. A combination of the historical maps, aerial images and Lidar data study and field research as well were used for the identification and analysis of stone mounds and walls. The volumes of stone mounds and walls in 2018 were computed from the digital terrain model derived from the Lidar data. Dependencies between the individual characteristics in individual years were quantified by correlation coefficient (r) and that of determination (r 2). Compared to 1894, the number of stone mounds in 2018 decreased by 38%, their overall area diminished by 62%. The main driving force of the disappearance or transformation of stone mounds and walls has been the transition to large-area vineyards. Stone mounds and walls though remain a noticeable testimony to the traditional viticultural landscape with undeniable biodiversity and cultural/ historical value.

Viticulture has historically been an important part of the social and economic life in the Mediterranean, while wine is reckoned among the oldest documented trades. The aim of the study is to record, evaluate and analyze spatial data from historical sources in order to gain insights into the dynamics of the viticultural landscape from the beginning of the Ottoman period to the present day. The study was based on (a) three historical maps published in 1885, 1942 and 1969, (b) records from historical surveys—two from the Ottoman period (1572 fiscal survey, 1832/33 property survey) and the British agricultural census of 1931, (c) present-day records from the vineyard survey of 2009 carried out by the Republic of Cyprus. In the beginning of the study period the center of viticulture was well established within the area of the southern and eastern slopes of Troodos massif. The vineyards expanded mainly around the same growing area until WW2 when they gradually began to be relocated in southwest direction to lower altitudes. This long-term trajectory of spatial patterns was driven by external demand for the product but also by the interplay of environmental, topographic and cultural factors, as well as by the state’s policy framework which largely reflected long-term Mediterranean-wide patterns.
