Modification of properties of CaCO3‐polymerization‐filled polyethylene

Abstract: CaCO 3 -polyethylene (PE) compositions, containing an ultrahigh molecular polyethylene (UHMPE) interlayer between the filler surface and the PE matrix, were synthesized by two-step polymerization of ethylene on a filler surface activated with a suitable catalyst. The properties of the compositions were studied depending on the molecular weight of the PE matrix and the thickness of the UHMPE intermediate layer at the filler particles. It was shown that the presence of UHMPE as an interlayer in chalk-UHMPE-PE co… Show more

“…The addition of ethylene was continued during the 60‐min polymerization. The polymerization was stopped by the addition of sufficient amount of the acidified methanol,29–32 and the precipitated polymer was filtered, washed with methanol, and dried under vacuum.…”

“…The surface of CaCO 3 is often rendered hydrophobic by a variety of surface modifiers, such as stearic acid, 8 oleic acid and 9,10 coupling agents. 11,12 Recently, researchers paid more attention to modification of CaCO 3 with polymer, 13,14 including dendritic carboxylic acid, 15 polyacrylic acid, 7 vinyl triethoxysilane, 16 polypropyl-g-malefic anhydride copolymer, 17 polystyrene (PS) or poly(butyl methacrylate) 18 and polyacrylamide, 19 due to their strong ionic interaction with CaCO 3 . 7 Many polymerisation methods have been applied to modify CaCO 3 or to prepare polymer/CaCO 3 composite.…”
