Modification of epoxy-polyester and polyester powder coatings with silicone-acrylic nanopowders – effect on surface properties of coatings

Abstract: The effect of modification with 3 wt % of nanopowders containing silicone-acrylic core-shell nanoparticles (size ca. 100 nm) on surface properties of epoxy-polyester and polyester powder coatings was investigated. Contact angle (CA) determinations, atomic force microscopy (AFM), confocal microscopy (CM), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to assess this effect. It was found that the modified coatings showed si… Show more

“…Migration of silicone to the coating surface observed for coatings containing silicones was described in the earlier papers, e.g., [32,44,45] and was fully confirmed by XPS also for coatings obtained from SIL-ACR and ACR-SIL hybrid dispersions. In Figure 11 the percentage of Si in the layers close to coating surface as determined by XPS for hybrid SIL-ACR and ACR-SIL dispersions is plotted against distance from the surface.…”

“…3b-d. Paint coatings have a non-directional surface finish as reported in the literature [2,15,19]. Coating 2.1 exhibits a smoother surface and its roughness is lower than that of aluminum substrate.…”

“…The process has attracted special due to the implementation of stricter environmental regulations and its superior performance in many aspects when compared to liquid coatings. Moreover, the main advantages of powder coating include powder recyclability close to 100%, which can be reached by reclaiming over-sprayed powders with special equipment [1,6,7,15].…”
