Modifiable Midlife Risk Factors, Independent Aging, and Survival in Older Men: Report on Long‐Term Follow‐Up of the Uppsala Longitudinal Study of Adult Men Cohort

Abstract: A normal midlife BMI and not smoking were associated with independent aging close to four decades later, indicating that normal weight at midlife has the potential not only to increase survival, but also to preserve independence with aging.

“…ULSAM represents a longitudinal epidemiological, still ongoing, study based on all available men born 1920–1924 and who were living in Uppsala county in the beginning of the 1970s. These men had all undergone extensive examinations at approximately 50, 60, 70, 77, 82 and 88 years of age [ 21 , 22 ]. Full screening and official registry data are available in databases, which are being continuously updated ( http://www.pubcare.uu.se/ulsam ).…”

“…Several studies have suggested that midlife may be a crucial time window for the prevention of age‐related health decline . Several studies on the link between corpulence and either multidimensional healthy aging or longevity have been published. However, the commonly used main outcome has been survival , and only four studies have specifically targeted midlife as an exposure period .…”

“…A Swedish study, Uppsala Longitudinal Study of Adult Men, which investigated men aged 49-51 years (n=2,293) in midlife and followed them up for four decades, showed that low work-time physical activity had a stronger association with better physical and cognitive function, but the association between leisure-time physical activity and olderage physical and cognitive function was not statistically significant (Franzon, Zethelius, Cederholm, & Kilander, 2015).…”
