A comprehensive thermodynamic model of the marine diesel engine in combination with the operating cost assessment is used in the decision-making process regarding the selection of the most favorable slow steaming speed. The influence of the number of cylinders and sailing speed on exhaust emissions, fuel consumption and operating costs is analyzed for the case of a containership sailing on a Trans-Pacific route. The engine simulation model was used for the calculation of engine fuel consumption, NOX and soot emissions. The operating costs and annual income were calculated through a fuel consumption correlation. The benefit of slow steaming is shown through the comparison of calculated data with the data calculated for the six-cylinder engine and the design speed of 23 knots. The highest reduction of 67.2% in CO2 and 93.3% in NOX emissions is achieved with the seven-cylinder engine at 15 knots, but the six-cylinder engine yields the highest increase in income per route of 6.2%. To comply with the proposed regulations for GHG emissions, the sailing speed should be reduced by at least 26%, which results in a decrease in the annual income by 24% compared to the design speed.

Increasing air pollution is one of the significant problems globally, especially in developing countries that are caused mainly by exhaust emissions from motor vehicles. This study aims to analyse the performance of a diesel engine using biodiesel as fuel and compare it with pure diesel oil. In the present study, biodiesel was produced from waste vegetable oil. The transesterification was performed with methyl alcohol in the presence of catalyst potassium hydroxide. Blends B10 and B20 were made by mixing pure diesel and biodiesel fuel. Various parameters such as brake specific fuel consumption, brake thermal efficiency, mass flow rate, and brake power were calculated. At 5 kg load, the brake thermal efficiency for B10 was higher compared to pure diesel and B20 by 13.72% and 10.02 %, respectively, while the fuel consumption time was 2.35 % and 3.56 % more than pure diesel for B10 and B20, respectively. At no-load conditions, the fuel consumption rate for B10 was maximum, 5.17 % and 12.38 % more than that of B20 and pure diesel, respectively. Thus, without compensating for the power and brake thermal efficiency, vegetable oil-based biodiesel and its blends can be used in CI diesel engines as an alternative fuel.

Development of a heat exchanger for cogeneration via TEG

To develop an innovative cogeneration biomass boiler, which uses thermoelectric generators (TEG), a simplified model of the heat exchanger is created and the design is optimized. The boiler with a thermal power of 200 kW will partly convert the heat into electricity. The maximum temperature of the hot side of the TEG should not exceed 300°C to avoid damage. While holding these requirements the cost and the installation space of the heat exchanger should be as low as possible, with a minimal effort for the flue gas blowers at once. Following these objectives, the simplified heat exchanger model is optimized with NOMAD optimization algorithm. Out of the resulting Pareto front two heat exchanger designs are discussed.
