Plant-based foods have become attractive for scientists and food producers. Beneficial effects related to their consumption as dietary supplements are due to the presence of natural occurring secondary metabolites. In this context, studies on these products are important for natural and safely food ingredients evaluation. The aim of this study was to evaluate root extract of eight Asphodeline species as antioxidants, enzyme inhibitors and phytochemical content. Spectrophotometric antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory assays were performed. Total phenolic and flavonoids contents as well as the chemical free-anthraquinones profiles were determined using routinely procedure (HPLC-PDA). Data show that Asphodeline roots can be considered as a new source of natural compounds and can be used as a valuable dietary supplement. Some differences related to biological activities can be inferred to other phytochemicals that can be considered in the future for their synergic or competitive activities.

This study is designed to optimize the extraction of polyphenolics and antioxidant potential of loquat leaves using response surface methodology (RSM). Three levels and three variables Box‐Behnken experimental design in combination with RSM was applied. Independent variables were solvent concentration (10–90%), temperature (20–60°C) and time (60–180 min), while investigated response was total phenolic content as well as antioxidant activity. The experimental results were fitted to a second‐order quadratic polynomial model, and they showed a good fit to the proposed model. In order to assess model fitness and determine optimal conditions, for maximal phenolic content and antioxidant activity, analysis of variance was employed. Determined optimized conditions for maximizing yield of antioxidant compounds were within the experimental range: ethanol concentration of 88.4%, extraction temperature of 28°C, extraction time of 70.8 min. Under these conditions, the predicted maximum values were TP‐77.18 mg GAE/g, DPPH‐80.42 mg TE/g, CUPRAC‐308.87 mg TE/g and FRAP‐164.12 mg TE/g. Practical applications Plant phenolics have remarkable biological activities including antioxidant, antimicrobial and anticancer. Therefore, their extraction techniques have gained more attention in recent years. This study was designed to detect optimal extraction conditions of independent factors (i.e. solvent concentration, temperature and time) in order to obtain the highest yields of phenolics from loquat leaves as well as antioxidant activity. This study could be valuable for designing new nutraceutical and functional food ingredients in terms of high recovery of phenolics from loquat leaves.

An increasing tendency has recently emerged for the use of phytotherapeutic agents as alternative to commercial pharmacological agents for the treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of Serenoa repens alcohol extract treatment on BPH patients' symptoms and major parameters during one-year follow-up. The study was performed on 70 men aged 40 -79 years (mean 60.58) with symptomatic BPH that were divided into a group of 40 patients treated with Serenoa repens extract (SRT) and a control group of 30 patients that received no treatment and were observed only. The following parameters were determined at the time of diagnosis (baseline), and after 6 and 12 months: prostate size, serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and uroflowmetry parameters including maximum flow rate (MFR), average flow rate (AFR) and post-voiding residual volume (PVRV). In addition, the relevant patient symptoms were evaluated using the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) system. The patients in the SRT group showed a statistically significant increment of the average MFR and AFR values and reduction of PV relative to the control group (p<0.05). The significant differences between the proportion of patients with prostate volume >40 ml in the SRE treated group vs. control group was observed (p<0.05). The mean IPSS score was highly significantly reduced in the SRT group (p<0.01). The mild improvements of the urine flow, prostate size and IPSS score during 12 months treatment with the Serenoa repens extract indicate possible efficiency of this phytotherapeutic agent in patients with BPH.
