Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and the risk of stroke recurrence in patients with a history of minor ischemic stroke in Japan: a retrospective analysis

Abstract: Patients with a history of mild ischemic stroke had low MVPA and high VFL values, which together may be a risk factor for RIS.

“…Insufficient levels of moderate–vigorous physical activity (typically < 10 MET hours/week) have been identified as predictive of recurrent ischaemic stroke [ 53 ]. From the range of predictor variables tested in this study, cardiovascular fitness presents the most utility as a determinant, not just for physical activity participation but for combined health behaviours after stroke, presenting a legitimate target in stroke secondary prevention.…”

“…Especially in minor stroke cases, secondary prevention is essential, and targeting the intensity of PA seems opportune, since this parameter is lowered compared to healthy peers [8,51]. Moreover, previous studies showed that when persons who suffered from a stroke exercise at high intensities, their quality of life improves and the likelihood of stroke recurrence is reduced [39,52,53]. Future studies should seek to determine the intensity threshold that improves PC most effectively, so it can be used to set targets in interventions.…”

“…Stroke management guidelines recommend physical activity as a rehabilitation process because it has been shown to improve physical fitness, reduce stroke disability, and improve the overall quality of life. Patients with a history of mild ischemic stroke who have a low MVPA (moderate-to-vigorous physical activity) and a high VFL value (visceral fat level) are risk factors for stroke recurrence [22].…”
