Models of Inflammation: Carrageenan Air Pouch

Abstract: The subcutaneous air pouch is an in vivo model that can be used to study the components of acute and chronic inflammation, the resolution of the inflammatory response, the oxidative stress response, and potential therapeutic targets for treating inflammation. Injection of irritants into an air pouch in rats or mice induces an inflammatory response that can be quantified by the volume of exudate produced, the infiltration of cells, and the release of inflammatory mediators. The model presented in this unit has … Show more

“…The air pouch model is an established model for preclinical anti‐inflammatory drug efficiency studies. The air pouch mimics the synovial cavity and, when challenged with carrageenan (CA), provides a localized sterile inflammatory environment suitable to study PGs (Duarte, Vasko, & Fehrenbacher, ). All animal studies are reported in compliance with the ARRIVE guidelines (Kilkenny, Browne, Cuthill, Emerson, & Altma, ) and with the recommendations made by the British Journal of Pharmacology.…”

“…i-Bodies Block Cell Recruitment in a Mouse in Vivo Modeli-Body efficacy in a murine in vivo study was performed by examining whether the i-bodies could antagonize cell recruitment in an "air pouch" model (58). In this study, the vehicleonly control showed extensive leukocyte migration into the air pouch in response to the presence of CXCL12 (Fig.…”

“…Secondary lesions involve the inflammation of the non-injected sites and a decrease in animal weight that occurs after 11-12 days due to immune response. The arthritic index was determined as the sum of the scores [41].…”
