Models of addiction and types of interventions: An integrative look

Abstract: Background: Use of psychoactive substances and problem gambling create serious harm to individuals who engage in these practices and to society as a whole (World Health Organization, 2002). The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) regularly monitors drug-related problems and interventions, as well as the efficiency of interventions. The scope and methodology of monitoring, however, depends on the conceptualization of "addiction."

“…Use of the COM-B model is widespread with respect to: (a) guiding data collection and analysis in qualitative studies (Atkins, Kelly, Littleford, Leng, & Michie, 2017), (b) informing intervention development (Barker, Atkins, & de Lusignan, 2016), and (c) explaining the findings of systematic reviews (Simon & West, 2015). However, despite the widespread use of COM-B, there is currently no standard measure that operationalizes fully each of the six domains of the model.…”

“…Sulkunen provides tools for approaching the structuring of addictive behavior in both scientific and lay discourse through an images theory of addiction. Simon and West (2015) give an overview of different models of addiction that may serve as a theoretical framework on which further development of prevention…”

“…12 Defining recovery from SUD is contentious and increasingly described as a process rather than an event. 13 Although many heterogeneous models of addiction exist, 14 there is little research on the journey from drug initiation through to recovery that is not biologically based or of known relevance to young people, women and to Low-and-Middle-Income-Countries (LMIC). In the present article, we describe the typical routes through SUD to recovery as narrated by young Indian people who have walked this path.…”
