Acceptability, reliability, and validity of a brief measure of capabilities, opportunities, and motivations (“COM‐B”)

Abstract: Objectives. The Capabilities, Opportunities, Motivations, Behaviour (COM-B) model is being used extensively to inform intervention design, but there is no standard measure with which to test the predictive validity of COM or to assess the impact of interventions on COM. We describe the development, reliability, validity, and acceptability of a generic 6-item self-evaluation COM questionnaire.Design and methods. The questionnaire was formulated by behaviour change experts. Acceptability was tested in two indepe… Show more

“…• Participants demographics (e.g. age, gender, ethnicity, professional group) • Previous COVID-19 symptoms/diagnosis • Perceived effects of COVID-19 on professional practice • Perceived support from the Government and General Dental Council (GDC) • Infection control measures (procedures in place in order to reduce the risk of infection within the dental practice) • A COM-B part consisting of questions on returning to practice [16] Questions were constructed by a multidisciplinary team of periodontists and psychologists and aimed to assess the various impacts of the pandemic on dental practice. Items were constructed with standard psychometric procedures in mind and most were assessed using a 5point Likert scales.…”

“…From the list of 93 possible BCTs ( Michie et al, 2013 ), research staff selected the techniques deemed to be most effective and feasible in eliciting the desired behaviour change of helping adults move more. The list was created by reviewing the evidence on effective techniques for increasing adults’ physical activity levels ( Brannan et al, 2019 , Keyworth et al, 2020 , McKay et al, 2019a , McKay et al, 2019b ), and mapping the BCTs on to the intervention functions.…”

“…Following the identification of these factors, it is important that they are implemented and operationalised appropriately. To do so, the Capability, Opportunity, and Motivation model of Behaviour (COM-B) was selected as it has predictive validity on the delivery of behaviour change interventions [100,101]. The COM-B model is a behaviour system that draws on the interaction between capability, opportunity, and motivation to generate a behaviour, in this case help-seeking [100].…”
