Models and Reality: When Science Tackles Sex

Abstract: Through a discussion of the way science has been used to address intersexuality, I explore an idea about how to understand science as objective and yet influenced by social, historical, and cultural factors. I propose that the Semantic View of theories provides a means of understanding how science describes reality, and I look a t the way science has been used to distinguish the sexes to provide an illustration.

“…This, in turn, has motivated the position taken by authors such as Sloep & van der Steen (1987a, b) and Ereshefsky (1991) and the response and/or further developments of Beatty (1987), Lloyd (1987Lloyd ( , 1988 and Thompson (1987Thompson ( , 2007. This variant of semantic view has also been applied to the analysis of theories of sex and gender (Crasnow 2001) and of ecology (Castle 2001). We also find the use of the axiomatization à la Suppes for attempting to identify the class of models of the theory of evolution by natural selection and of population genetics (Magalhães & Krause 2000).…”
