The objective of this study was to create a single mathematical equation able to estimate the leaf area of different cassava cultivars from one lineal dimension without destroying any plant tissue. Two hundred leaves per cultivar from ten cultivars were used to calibrate the model and more than one hundred leaves per cultivar were used to test its predictive capacity as independent data. All equations were the result of the nonlinear correlation between the leaf area and the length of its central lobe. To validate it as a "general" equation, another set of five cultivars were used. A "specific" equation for each cultivar was also calibrated to compare with the "general" equation's performance. Cultivar Vassourinha has remarkably different leaf morphology from the other nine cultivars, making the "general" equation's tendency line deviate and lowering its coefficient of determination. Therefore, one more equation was generated excluding that cultivar and, as a result, it was not possible to estimate the leaf area from all the cultivars using only the "general" equation. The "general without Vassourinha" equation has a high accuracy level when estimating leaf area of the other nine cultivars, plus the extra five cultivars that were included to validate the general equation; all of them present similar leaf morphology. Due to its importance, Vassourinha cultivar's "specific" equation should be used when estimating leaf area for this cultivar or other cultivars with similar leaf morphology.

O Brasil se destaca entre os cinco maiores produtores de mandioca do mundo, contudo, a produtividade varia no território nacional, devido, dentre outros fatores, a utilização de variedades inadequadas para região, nesse sentido, objetivou-se selecionar cultivares de mandioca nas condições do Recôncavo baiano, em época de colheita com 12 meses. No trabalho foram utilizadas 15 cultivares distribuídas em blocos casualizados com três repetições, avaliando-se sete características agronômicas e a qualidade da farinha. Os dados foram submetidos a análise de variância e multivariada. Pela análise de variância foi observada variação para todas as características com exceção do comprimento da raiz. Produtividade acima de 35,00 t. ha-1 foi registrada para todas as cultivares, com destaque para a cultivar Irará que atingiu 47,00 t. ha-1 e médias superiores para as características agronômicas e de qualidade de farinha, contrariamente às cultivares BRS Tianguá e BRS Jarina. Correlações positivas de alta magnitude foram registradas entre as características de qualidade da farinha, com destaque para as cultivares BRS Amansa burro e 9783/13. As cultivares Irará, BRS Amanso burro e 9783/13 se destacaram para as condições desse estudo, podendo ser utilizadas pelos produtores de mandioca do Recôncavo da Bahia.

Diversidade Genética Entre Acessos de Mandioca Por Meio de Caracteres Agronômicos

Neste estudo se estimou a diversidade genética de acessos de mandioca coletados em Chapadão do Sul – MS, por meio de nove descritores qualitativos e quatro quantitativos. Após 60 dias de germinados os acessos, os descritores propostos foram avaliados. Os dados foram submetidos às análises de agrupamento pelo método de Tocher modificado, análises de correlações de Pearson e análise das componentes principais (ACPs). As análises revelaram a existência de diversidade genética no germoplasma considerando as duas classes de dados, além de correlações positivas e negativas significativas (P<0.001). Observou-se no agrupamento de Tocher Modificado a formação de seis agrupamentos, e os acessos 1 e 15 como os mais contrastantes. O ACPs confirmou a variabilidade genética dos acessos, explicando 52,14% da variabilidade nos dois primeiros ACPs. De acordo com os resultados obtidos, é possível praticar seleção em estádios inicias do desenvolvimento da cultura com fins de pré-melhoramento, expressando-se a partir dos descritores testados a diversidade da cultura mantida em condições “on farm”. Dos métodos empregados, o de ACPs é o método mais eficiente para estudar a diversidade genética de plantas de mandioca no banco de germoplasma. Palavras-chave: Manihot esculenta. Abstract This study estimated the genetic diversity of cassava accessions collected in Chapadão do Sul - MS, through nine qualitative and four quantitative descriptors. After 60 daysof the accessions germination, the proposed descriptors were evaluated. Data were submitted to cluster analysis by the Modified Tocher method, Pearson correlation analysis and Principal Coordinate Analysis (PCoA). The analyzes revealed the existence of genetic diversity in the germplasm considering both data classes, as well as significant positive and negative correlations (P<0.001). In the Modified Tocher grouping, six clusters were formed, with the accessions 1 and 15 as the most contrasting ones. The PCoA confirmed the genetic variability of the accessions, explaining 52.14% of the variability in the first two PCoAs. According to the results obtained, it is possible to practice selection in early stages of crop development for pre-breeding purposes, expressing from the tested descriptors the diversity of the culture maintained under farm conditions. Of the methods employed, PCoA is the most efficient method for studying the genetic diversity of cassava plants in the germplasm bank. Keywords: Manihot Esculenta.
