The recovering of aluminium from aluminium dross waste involves so much cost and energy. As a result, there is a need for its utilization as an engineering material. This research assessed the suitability of aluminium dross waste in improving the index properties of pavement geomaterial. Aluminum dross, a solid waste from aluminum industry was added at 4%, 8%, 12%, and 16% by weight of the lateritic soil sample. Sieve analysis, Atterberg limit, specific gravity test, Compaction test, and California bearing ratio (CBR) were carried out on the samples. The increased addition of aluminium dross to the sample reduced the plasticity index from 15% to 13.8%, which showed an improvement in the soil sample. Also, the CBR value increased from 51.22 to 64.32 with the addition of aluminum dross which signifies increased strength of the stabilized soil sample. The increase in strength of the aluminum dross stabilized soil is due to the good binder–matrix interaction of aluminum dross and the soil. The result of this experimental research showed that the utilization of aluminium dross in improving the strength properties of pavement interlayer proved to be a sustainable alternative.

Effect of Demographic Characteristics on the choice of Paratransit Modes

The absence of public transportation has led to the growth and expansion of paratransit modes. This has increased traffic congestion, traffic crashes and traffic pollution. This research assessed the effect of demographic characteristics on para transiting in Lagos with special focus on the mainland. To achieve the aim of this research, the mainland was divided into two zones based on the geographical location which are the Ikorodu and Ikeja zone. Domiciliary information techniques were used in data collection. This was backed up with an oral interview. Two hundred question (200) questionnaires were administered with 89% return rate. The information captured were demographic characteristics, the volume of trips, frequency of trips, trip types, operations of the paratransit transportation system, travel behaviour of passengers (travel time, travel cost, travel purpose). SPSS version 18 was used for the data analysis. The result of the survey revealed that paratransit modes serve as a feeder connection between neighbourhoods in the study area. Additionally, it provides a feeder connection between major arterial roads (truck A and B roads). Flexibility accounts for 41% of the reason why paratransit mode is preferred by respondents. The bivariate analysis showed a weak negative relationship for the correlation between frequency of trip and age. The outcome of this research will aid transportation planners, policymakers, and transportation experts on the appropriate strategy to adopt for effective mobility as a unimodal approach to providing effective movement may not be foreseeable in the study area.

University Community Commuting Trip Patterns: Temporal Assessment

The trip pattern of the university community is a vital component of the overall transportation demand of a province, but it is not well epitomized in travel demand models. This descriptive research assessed the temporal commuting pattern in the university environment, with special focus on universities in southwestern Nigeria. This study was achieved by using detailed questionnaires and oral interviews for data collection from both staff and students in the universities considered. Information on socioeconomics, demographics, the frequency of trips, trip time, and transportation mode choice were analyzed. We adopted statistical software SPSS version 21 and Microsoft Excel for the data analysis. The results of our research showed that the use of the shuttle as a transportation mode declined as the trip time increased, among university staff, with an R 2 of 0.9308. Conversely, bicycle use increased irrespective of the trip time for both student and staff, with a R 2 value of 0.928. Universities' commuting patterns are important, because the commuting habits of students and staff have consequences on the motivation for both study and work. Ultimately, this data will help transportation policy makers work on the effective strategy required for efficient transportation planning in the university environment in similar cities in Nigeria and developing nations.
