Modelling of the Biomass mCHP Unit for Power Peak Shaving in the Local Electrical Grid

Abstract: In the article, the method and algorithm for a control strategy of the operation of a micro combined heat and power (mCHP) unit and for reducing the power consumption peaks (peak shaving) are proposed and analyzed. Two scenarios of the mCHP’s operation, namely with and without the control strategy, are discussed. For calculation purposes, a boiler fired with wood pellets coupled with a Stirling engine, manufactured by ÖkoFEN, was used. These results were used to analyze two scenarios of the control strategy. I… Show more

“…Similar to solar and wind energy-based systems, this challenge is solved mainly by an efficient control system. In this regard, Glinsky et al [149] developed a control scheme for a biomass-based micro combined heat and power (mCHP) plant generally for peak shaving purposes. Specifically, the proposed control scheme employed actual demand profiles at different seasons of the year to moderate production of heat and power in the mCHP device.…”

“…Recently, ÖkoFEN, which is an Austrian company, launched a pellet boiler with an integrated Stirling engine, called Pellematic Condens_e. Its nominal thermal output is around 9 kW th and its rated electrical power is up to 0.6 kW el [53,54]. Furthermore, a Swedish company, Inresol AB, developed a multifuel CHP system (Genius) composed of a Stirling Engine (V2-6), which was able to provide 15 kW of heat and produce up to 5 kW of electrical energy [55,56].…”
