Modelling of light-induced chlorophyll a fluorescence rise (O-J-I-P transient) and changes in 820 nm-transmittance signal of photosynthesis

Abstract: Theoretical modelling is often overlooked in photosynthesis research even if it can significantly help with understanding of explored system. A new model of light-induced photosynthetic reactions occurring in and around thylakoid membrane is introduced here and used for theoretical modelling of not only the light-induced chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence rise (FLR; the O-J-I-P transient), reflecting function of photosystem II (PSII), but also of the 820 nmtransmittance signal (I 820 ), reflecting function of ph… Show more

“…The well-known mathematical models of the kinetic processes in PSII (Baake and Schlöder 1992;Stirbet et al 1998;Vredenberg 2000Vredenberg , 2011Stirbet et al 2001;Lazár 2003;Strasser et al 2004;Zhu et al 2005) describe only the fast OJIP induction phases of chlorophyll fluorescence on the time scale from milliseconds to hundreds of milliseconds (see review by Lazár 2009;Stirbet and Govindjee 2012). “…Another model by Lazár (2009) includes the ET reactions in PSII (with the oxygen-evolving complex OEC), Cyt b 6 f, PSI, PQ pool in the membrane, PC in the lumen and Fd and FNR in the stroma. As a result, LEF and CEF chains in the thylakoid membrane were modeled, although proton fluxes in stroma and lumen were not considered explicitly.…”

“…Most recently, mathematical modeling is used to attribute chlorophyll fluorescence rise to individual processes of energy flow through PS II and electron transport chain in thylakoid membrane of a chloroplast (e.g. Lazár 2006Lazár , 2009.…”

“…At a DCMU concentration of 500 µM, the induction curve lost its sigmoid characteristic between steps J and I, since the fluorescence intensity in phase J was similar to F M ( Figures 1A and 1C), suggesting an accumulation of Q A -by the complete inhibition of the transfer of electrons from Q A to Q B (LAZAR, 2009). DCMU blocks the transfer of electrons from Q A to QB (VELTHUYS, 1981), as it competes with the Q B binding site on the D1 protein of PSII (TREBST; DRABER, 1986).…”
