Modelling of dynamics and stratification effects in pellet boilers

Abstract: Optimizing solar and pellet heating systems can be performed by system simulations in TRNSYS. However; this requires detailed boiler models that can properly model the thermal behaviour of the boilers, such as stratification and thermal response. This study uses a combination of existing models for modelling of the pellet burner part (TRNSYS Type 210) and the water volume (TRNSYS Type 340). This approach addresses the thermal dynamics and internal stratification more accurately than other available models. The… Show more

“…Bourke and Bansal (2012) expressed the thermal efficiency of the gas instantaneous water heater with respect to the operating conditions by an equation in order to be used in the TRNSYS model to include the efficiency variations of this water heater and to yield more accurate energy consumption calculations. Persson et al (2019) established a boiler model combining two of the existing models in TRNSYS as Type 210 and Type 341 which is a modified version of Type 340. The pellet burner was modelled using the Type 210.…”

“…Bourke and Bansal (2012) [15] developed a new test method to define the annual energy consumption of a domestic solar water heater boosted with a gas instantaneous water heater making use of TRNSYS models. Persson et al (2019) [16] combined TRNSYS is a widely used simulation tool and there are many other models including space and DHW heating for other applications and comprehensive system analyses [17,18]. To sum up, there are challenging targets concerned with the combi boiler appliance concepts since they are widely used.…”

“…Biomass appliances use wood logs or pellet as fuel and are divided into two groups: boilers (Haller et al 2011;Petrocelli and Lezzi 2014;Carlon et al 2015) and air stoves. The present paper focuses on the last-mentioned solution since it is the most diffused in the market, although boilers can be versatile with different integration such as solar heating (Persson et al 2019;Krarouch et al 2020) and new technologies as wood-pellet hybrid stoves (Lamberg et al 2017).…”
