Modelling a contradiction-oriented design approach for innovative product design

Abstract: Without creativity in design, there is no potential for innovation. This article investigates the role of contradictions in enhancing creativity in product design. Based on the inventive principles of the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving, this article presents a novel design method by integrating technical and physical contradiction analysis methods into the conceptual design activities of new product development. Although the importance of innovative design is widely recognised, there is a lack of systemat… Show more

“…Unlike the above methods using functional representations for analogy search, some structured analogical design methods take schematization concepts directly as analogical stimuli or use the schematization concepts to organize instance knowledge as the source for analogy search. TRIZ is such a structured method for analogical design that abstracts problem into some contradictions 15 and then develops solutions using the 40 inventive principles as conceptual analogies. 16 Inspiration from instance knowledge/analogies is also quite important in transforming the schematization solutions in TRIZ into specific solutions.…”

“…As a problem-solving principle or procedure extracted from design cases, expert schema can either be used to arouse innovation by solving design problems or contradictions, or work as the descriptive medium to associate more other cases to be used for analogy search. Abstracted from a great number of patents, the inventive principles in TRIZ (the Russian acronym for theory of inventive problem solving) are the typical expert schemas which could not only solve innovative design problems 15,16 but also associate instance analogies. 17,18 3.…”

“…The TRIZ innovative design method was developed in the former Soviet Union by Altshuller, who had analyzed over 400,000 patents to establish 39 engineering parameters (Table 1), there are 40 inventive principles (Table 2) and contradiction matrix (Table 3). [14][15][16][17] It is effective to help designers to solve contradiction of system problems and to improve product design through using TRIZ method. During the problem-solving mode (Figure 1), the first step is to find the contradictory characteristics in product's system.…”

“…The negative correlation is defined as design bottleneck that needs to be solved in the new product development. Ko et al 21 and Liu and Cheng 22 adopted the TRIZ to address design conflicts. Therefore, TOPSIS and the TRIZ are integrated into fuzzy QFD to prioritize interdependent TAs.…”
