Modeling Wrinkles on Smooth Surfaces for Footwear Design

Abstract: We describe two new shape operators that superimpose wrinkles on top of a smooth NURBS surface. Previous research studying wrinkles focused mostly on cloth modeling or in animations, which are driven more by visual realism, but allow large elastic deformations. Our operators generate wrinkle-shaped deformations in a region of a smooth surface along a given boundary based on a few basic parametric inputs such as wrinkle magnitude and extent (these terms will be defined in the paper). The essential geometric tra… Show more

“…Research on shoe-last has been focused on foot measurement [17,18], sizing system [19], orthopedic shoe-last [20], mass-customization of shoe-last [21,22], custom shoe-last [23,24] and footwear fitting [3,25]. Furthermore, there are studies in making shoe design based on digital shoe-lasts [26][27][28]. There is ongoing research on comfort [10], fit [11] and matching of foot to shoe-last [22,25].…”

“…The development of new design tools for sole (Kim et al, 2008) or upper (Jing et al, 2005) parts allow the addition of very small details in the shoe design process. In addition, new digital design paradigms support direct style-lines development and allow shortening of the conceptual-design cycle Sapidis, 2004, 2005;Liu et al, 2006).…”

“…Bridge boundary triangularization is achieved by minimum energy folding process of simulation cloth piece rotating from one end to the other end. Fu et al [4] synthesized deformation simulation of wrinkle shape in the smooth surface area with fixed boundary and gave some basic parameter inputs such as wrinkle amplitude and extension.…”
