Modeling Water Allocation under Extreme Drought of South-to-North Water Diversion Project in Jiangsu Province, Eastern China

Abstract: Along with China's economic development and social progress, water scarcity has become increasingly challenging. Optimized allocation of water resources, especially through water transfer project, is one of the important approaches to mitigate water shortages. In this study, authors built a model of water resources allocation simulation and the microcosmic configuration based on a complex water network in the east route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project in Jiangsu Province, east China. Selecting dat… Show more

“…The average annual runoff into the lake of Hongze Lake is 32.51 billion m 3 (66% of which is from June to September), and the average annual inflow into the river is 16.48 billion m 3 , including 11.93 billion m 3 during flood season and 5.53 billion m 3 in sea, including 1.70 billion m 3 in North Jiangsu Irrigation Canal, 2.13 billion m 3 in Abandoned Yellow River and 700 million m 3 in Huaishuxin River. Hongze Lake completes the water abandonment task by Erhe Sluice and Sanhe Sluice during flood season [27].…”

“…However, deterioration of water quality can be caused by many factors, such as complex geographical environment and intensive human intervention (including mining, intensive agriculture activity), inadequate sewage treatment measures (Xu et al,2021) and poor groundwater environment (Li et al, 2020a;Zeng et al, 2020).In addition, damming and the construction of multiple small reservoirs have drastically reduced surface runoff, limiting the river's ability to dilute effluent from sewage treatment plants, see section 4.2. As mentioned above, our findings support the development of strategies by identifying key characteristics of pollutant sources and incorporating them into regional planning (e.g.…”
