Modeling the Influence of Weather Variability on Leisure Traffic

Abstract: Weather conditions often have an important influence on participation in recreation and tourism (R&T) activities, and many activities require specific sets of weather conditions to make them enjoyable or possible. Despite the intuitive nature of the relationship between weather and R&T participation, this topic has received little attention in the academic literature. This is even more surprising given increasing recognition of the likely implications of climate change for R&T activities. In light of this lack… Show more

“…In order to better understand how tourism communities can become more resilient to climate change, society must first better understand how weather and climate factors impact visitors today [4,[14][15][16][17][18]. This paper has sought to partially address these concerns by examining in detail how daily zoo visitor attendance at the Phoenix and Atlanta zoological parks has corresponded with the ambient atmospheric conditions from September 2001 to June 2011.…”

“…This is further emphasized by Rutty and Scott [13] who recently stated: "there remains an important need to improve current climate change assessments by both basing them on climate data that represent the localized conditions where such tourism activities take place and providing considerations for thermal-physiological comfort." Before researchers can effectively understand how future climate change scenarios broadly impact tourist behavior, however, many researchers have suggested the importance of establishing present-day baselines for human behavioral response to varied weather conditions [14][15][16][17][18].…”

“…Regarding precipitation's role, while sunshine is often favorable [33], excessive precipitation can be negative [34,35]. Snowfall presents a unique case.…”

“…Adequate snow is mandatory for ski resorts (Gorman-Murray 2008; Hopkins 2015; Williams, Dossa, and Hunt 1997). Weather variables like temperature, wind, and snow depth were found to significantly affect various tourism outcomes, such as visitation to different tourism places (Becken 2013; Shih and Nicholls 2011, 2012; Shih, Nicholls, and Holecek 2009), tourist satisfaction with a destination (Vojtko et al 2020), and tourism spending (Wilkins et al 2018), even though urban tourists are more weather resilient (McKercher et al 2015). Such as people travel to warm destinations to escape the cold of winter (Becken and Wilson 2013; Wall 2007).…”
