Modeling soil–foundation–structure interaction

Abstract: SUMMARY This paper offers a guided tour through the various ways, used in practice, of accounting for soil–structure interaction in design and analysis, ranging from a complete analysis of the total combined system of foundation, soil and structure to approximate models of the system. The focus is on three types of structures: bridges on pile foundations, tall buildings with several levels of underground parking and large basement slabs with shallow embedment. The paper also reports on preliminary results from… Show more

“…By using the above methods, Moghaddasi et al used robust Monte Carlo simulation to analyze the SSI effects. Finn et al compared various numerical methods used in practice for simulating SSI effects. Venanzi et al pointed out that fixed‐based assumption might not always be on the safe side.…”

“…More recently, several studies were conducted to investigate the effect of SSI on SDOF and MDOF structural response (Galal and Naimi, ; Lee et al ., ; Halabian and Erfani, ; Finn et al ., ). As an instance, Halabian and Erfani (), by considering some limited generic reinforced concrete (RC) frame models resting on flexible foundations, evaluated the effects of stiffness and strength of the structure on strength reduction factors.…”

“…Numerical modeling (FEM) of interaction between building (foundation) structure and the subsoil was dealt with by authors in Refs. [12][13][14][15][16][17]. Bose and Das [18] employed the FEM in their analysis of stress and deformation below the rigid foundation.…”
