A majority of global secondary organic aerosol (SOA) comes from terpenoids. In this study, we carried out a 1 year nationwide observation of pinenes (α‐ and β‐pinene) and SOA tracers from monoterpenes (SOAM) and β‐caryophyllene (SOAC) over China for the first time. SOAM and SOAC tracers ranged from 9.80 to 49.0 ng m−3 and 1.72 to 7.72 ng m−3, respectively, with high levels in southern China. Pinenes ranged from 34 to 102 parts per trillion by volume, with α‐pinene dominant over β‐pinene. SOAM tracers were correlated between paired sites, suggesting a regional impact of SOAM, while pinenes were uncorrelated between sites due to their rapid oxidation. High levels of SOAM tracers were observed in spring and summer. However, at the Hailun site in Northeast China, SOAM tracers increased during winter. The positive correlation between SOAM tracers and the biomass burning (BB) tracer levoglucosan during winter at Hailun indicated that the unexpected increase of SOAM was associated with BB. The SOAC tracer, β‐caryophyllenic acid, increased during winter and was positively correlated with levoglucosan, suggesting substantial contributions from BB to SOAC production in wintertime. Together with SOA tracers from isoprene, these tracers were applied to estimate biogenic secondary organic carbon (BSOC) from isoprene, monoterpenes, and β‐caryophyllene. The annual average BSOC was 0.91 ± 0.41 μgC m−3,with the majority from monoterpenes and the highest level in Southwest China. BSOC was elevated from April to September and was lowest in January and February. BSOC composition dramatically changed from a monoterpene majority in fall‐spring to an isoprene majority in summer.

Evaluation of models for simulating temporal and spatial variations of PM 2.5 chemical composition in Japan has been limited by the lack of observational data. In this study, we used PM 2.5 chemical composition data measured simultaneously over several regions of Japan in winter, spring, and summer 2012 to evaluate three sensitivity simulations, one based on a secondary organic aerosol (SOA) yield model and two based on a volatility basis set (VBS) model. Concentrations of sulfate (SO 4 2-), nitrate (NO 3 -), and ammonium (NH 4 + ) were well reproduced by all the simulations in summer. However, in winter and spring, SO 4 2-concentrations were underestimated and NO 3 -concentrations were overestimated by the standard simulation. NO 3 -concentrations were better reproduced by a model with dry-deposition velocities of nitric acid and ammonia enhanced by a factor of 5, as was done in a previous study. Observed concentrations of elemental carbon and organic aerosol (OA) were higher at urban sites than at the surrounding remote sites, and this behavior was not adequately reproduced by models with a grid size of 15 km. Further refinements of emission inventories and models are necessary for better simulations of PM 2.5 chemical compositions. OA concentration was greatly underestimated by the simulation based on the SOA yield model over all the seasons but was better reproduced by the simulations based on the VBS model in spring and summer because aging reactions were considered in the VBS model-based simulations. The VBS model-based simulations reproduced the observations that primary OA predominated in winter and that the contribution of SOA was higher than that of primary OA in spring and summer. These contributions should be validated by means of observation-based source contributions of OA in future studies.

Severe PM 2.5 air pollution over the Asian continent is occasionally transported across the East China Sea by the westerly winds to Japan, continuing for long distances over the Pacific Ocean. Despite such polluted air masses causing health issues, conventional models tend to underestimate levels of organic aerosols (OA) and PM 2.5 . Here, PM 2.5 and its major components recorded during three field campaigns carried out at Fukue Island (32.75°N, 128.68°E), Japan (spring 2009), Rudong (32.25°N, 121.37°E), China (spring 2010), and Jeju (33.35°N, 126.39°E), Korea (autumn 2012) around the East China Sea were used to test the performance of the Weather Research and Forecasting-Chem/ATRAS-MOSAIC model. Overall, model performance was improved by introducing chemical aging represented by a volatility basis-set scheme, whereby median values of the model/observation ratio for OA were raised to 0.34-1.28 from 0.30-0.35 in the case of conventional settings. In particular, the levels of OA at the Fukue site and daytime buildup of the OA levels at all three sites were reproduced by the model. OA levels were still sometimes underestimated. This suggests that either emission rates of organic precursors are being underestimated or other pathways of OA formation are also important. Our analysis also indicates that this region is characterized by high OH concentrations, promoting chemical aging. The predictions of PM 2.5 levels in the model also improved, with median values of the model/observation ratio shifting from 0.67-0.91 to 0.68-0.95, when chemical aging of OA was taken into account.
