Modeling of Li-ion Battery Performance in Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Abstract: Considerable improvements can be obtained in battery performance for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) by employing an electrochemistry-transport model based on a multi-physics modeling framework and ultrafast numerical algorithms. One important advantage of this approach over the lumped equivalent circuit (or look-up table) approach is the ability of the former to adapt to changes in design and control. In this work, we present mathematical and numerical details of our approach, and demonstrate the robustness o… Show more

“…In the model we take the exchange current density to be independent of the solid lithium composition because the outer edges of the stacks are the LiC 6 phase, at least in the early stages of discharge or charge. 9 9 In Fig. 19 we will show for the base case that after 20 s the stacks on the surface of the secondary particle are fully converted to LiC12.…”

“…Furthermore, Lithium-based batteries are attractive as energy storage systems since they are less toxic than nickel cadmium or lead acid cells, and their disposal poses fewer environmental problems. In addition, it offers 40-50% battery weight reduction and 20-30% volume reduction as well as some margin of efficiency improvement compared to nickel cadmium battery [14].…”
