Modeling and Simulation of the Anticipated Effects of the Synchronous Condenser on an Electric-Power Network with Participating Wind Plants

Abstract: Installing a synchronous condenser (SC) onto an electricity grid can assist in the areas of reactive power needs, short-circuit strength, and, consequently, system inertia and guarantees better dynamic voltage recovery. This paper summarizes the practical potential of the synchronous condenser coordinated in an electric-power network with participating wind plants to supply reactive power compensation and injection of active power at their point of common coupling; it provides a systematic assessment method fo… Show more

“…As electric power production mix advances to a higher spread of wind farms, there are points on the electricity grid where stability becomes a problem. Hence, the need arises for active and reactive power regulation using wind machines for the former and the synchronous condenser technology for the latter [10]. The Type-3 wind machines are more efficient in extracting power than other types of wind power machines [11].…”

“…Lv et al [16] built a field‐circuit coupling model to analyse the stability of a synchronous generator in leading phase operation and leading phase depth was tested through experiments. Igbinovia et al [17] built an integrated model with wind plant and synchronous condenser to analysed the impacts when synchronous condenser was applied to a grid with wind plants. Vagnoni et al [18] conducted experiments of a pumped‐turbine and analysed the flow characteristics under the condenser mode.…”

“…These technologies can replace the rotating machines of the decommissioned generation plants (or synchronous generators can be converted into SynCons). SynCons have been used widely in power systems accounting for reactive support and 978-1-7281-1156-8/19$31.00©2019 IEEE XXX-X-XXXX-XXXX-X/XX/$XX.00 ©20XX IEEE voltage stability [2], [3]. SynCons have also the ability to elevate the SCL which can improve system interconnections (both HVAC and HVDC) [4] and power system protection [5].…”
