Modeling and Simulation of Annular Pressure Buildup APB Management Using Syntactic Foam in HP/HT Deepwater Wells

Abstract: Annular pressure buildup (APB) in high-pressure/high-temperature (HP/HT) deepwater wells can result in wellbore failure, even during drill-ahead operations. Manufactured to collapse at a specific pressure and installed on the external casing wall, syntactic foam is an economical solution to mitigate APB and protect casing strings in offshore HP/HT wells. This paper focuses on the modeling and simulation of the effects of syntactic foam deformation on APB in casing/tubing annuli. Syntactic foam i… Show more

“…Therefore, it was calculated on ANSYS engineering data by relation to Young's modulus and bulk modulus to attain a comparable Poisson's ratio to the actual [18]. The compressive modulus or compressibility is the repricoal relation to the bulk modulus, it indicates that the materials with high compressibility conversely are going to have a low value of bulk modulus, these phenomena are expressed in equation 1 where the Cb represents compressibility while Kb shows bulk modulus [19]- [21]. Thus, the Poisson's ratio of WPB, WPS, WPAL and WPI are 0.443, 0.196, 0.444, and 0.461 respectively.…”

“…26,27 But the compressible foam is difficult to transfer to the drilling platform because the large volume is needed, and trip in the casing with compressible foam will face the problem of fraction drag increasing. The former two methods are most reliable mitigation technologies because the foam and nitrogen have much better compressibility.…”
