Phenol-formaldehyde resins and a low-cost biomass residue, olive stones (OS), were used to prepare five activated carbons for CO 2 separation at atmospheric pressure, i.e., in post-combustion processes or from biogas and bio-hydrogen streams. Two phenolformaldehyde resins were synthesized: Resol, obtained by using alkaline environment, and Novolac, synthesized in the presence of an acid catalyst. Carbon precursors were prepared by mixing both resins with KCl or by mixing the Novolac resin with OS. The precursors were carbonized under an inert atmosphere of N 2 at different temperatures.The last stage in the synthesis of the adsorbents involved physical activation with carbon dioxide, which was carried out at different temperatures and burn-off degrees.Response surface methodology (RSM) is proposed as a tool for rapidly optimizing the activation parameters in order to obtain the highest possible CO 2 capture capacity of activated carbons. The optimum values of activation temperature and burn-off degree that maximize CO 2 uptake by the activated carbons at 35 ºC and atmospheric pressure were obtained within the experimental region. A value of CO 2 adsorption capacity of 9.3 wt.% was achieved. Activated carbons derived from Novolac phenol-formaldehyde * Corresponding author. Optimization of laccase production and its application in delignification of biomass

Purpose Current research focuses on the biological delignification of biomass by microbial laccase which is an environmentally friendly process. Methods Various statistical approaches were designed for optimization of laccase production like Plackett-Burman design as well as response surface methodology (RSM). A laccase mediator system was designed for the delignification of saw dust which was molecularly characterized by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results The present study reveals wheat bran is a potential substrate for the production of laccase (63 U/g and 9.6 mg/ g protein) under solid-state fermentation by Trichoderma harzianum strain HZN10. Statistical optimization by RSM using central composite design (CCD) revealed that wheat bran contributed maximally to the overall laccase production followed by yeast extract. Laccase production under optimized conditions yielded 510 U/g with 8.09-fold increase. HPLC peaks representing 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoic (vanillic) acid and 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxybenzoic (syringic) acid showed drastic reduction in laccasetreated saw dust sample indicating the elimination of toxic inhibitors, thereby signifying the detoxification of sample.The laccase-treated saw dust showed 1.6-fold increase in reducing sugars after enzymatic (cellulase) hydrolysis. The FTIR analysis revealed the structural alterations occurring during the delignification process. SEM of biologically treated saw dust revealed the morphological alterations during the delignification process targeting the fiber cell walls rich in lignin. Conclusion The delignification of saw dust was effective by laccase mediator system and was evidenced by HPLC, FTIR and SEM analysis. Hence, laccase can be a powerful tool in biomass to biofuel conversions.

WASTEWATER. The electrocoagulation have been considered a promising technology for wastewater food treatment. This paper evaluates the application of electrocoagulation for the treatment of poultry slaughterhouse wastewater using two types of electrode, iron and aluminum. The initial pH, the electrolysis time and the electrical current density were used as the operating variables. The optimal operating conditions for each electrode were validated by applying the Response Surface Methodology (RSM). It was observed that the best conditions for Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) reduction were the use of aluminum electrodes with electrolysis time of 40 minutes, initial pH of 4,0 and electrical current density of 30 A•m -2 . These conditions resulted in a COD removal of 86% with a final pH of 7,5. In the validation it was found a little over-prediction and a good fit for the total removal of COD with a bias and accuracy factor of 1,04 and 1,16 respectively. The developed models aim to facilitate the values prediction of process variables that should be favored when using the electrolytic method on a larger scale or in additional tests for poultry slaughterhouse wastewater treatment.Keywords: electrochemical dissolution; electrocoagulation; optimization; Response Surface Methodology and wastewater treatment. INTRODUÇÃOA produção de carne de frango tem apresentado um aumento expressivo desde a década passada no Brasil. Esse aumento da produção de carne de aves acarreta em um aumento na quantidade de resíduos gerados pela indústria de abate e processamento dos alimentos. Abatedouros de aves geram grandes quantidades de águas residuárias que contêm teores elevados de matéria orgânica biodegradável constituída de material suspenso e coloidal, tais como gorduras e proteí-nas. [1][2][3] As restrições legais para a disposicão de efluentes, os custos de tratamento, a presença de um consumidor ambientalmente consciente e a busca por alternativas menos impactantes e mais eficientes fizeram com que o tratamento de águas residuárias tenha emergido como uma grande preocupação na indústria de carnes. As condições de remoção de poluentes podem ser alcançadas por diferentes tipos de tratamentos das águas residuárias, sendo os mais comuns as tecnologias físico-químicas e os processos biológicos. Tecnologias físico-químicas como a coagulação/floculação/decantação abrangem três estágios na remoção sólido/ líquido.
