Modeling and Analysis of Surgery Patient Identification Using RFID

Abstract: This article proposes a workflow and reliability model for surgery patient identification using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification). Certain types of mistakes may be prevented by automatically identifying the patient before surgery. The proposed workflow is designed to ensure that both the correct site and patient are engaged in the surgical process. The reliability model can be used to assess improvements in patients’ safety during this process. A proof-of-concept system is developed to understand the infor… Show more

“…This work opens up many opportunities for research. We plan test our approach on other trades processes and measure the impact in terms of performance (Reina et al, 2012), competitiveness (Kim, 2009), understanding, sharing, enterprise resource planning systems in healthcare (Jeong et al, 2009;Kontio et al, 2014), knowledge searching (Jeong et al, 2009;Pusa & Haapalainen, Table 11. An example of knowledge maps to merge by the system CARTOCEL (Brahami et al, 2010, pp.…”

“…In this context, we consider that the SEMEP service is a set of trades' processes. A process is a succession of activities or operations that transform input elements (for example, an application a vaccine for a new born or diagnosis of a pregnant woman) into output elements (the issuance of a vaccination record, of a medical report) by creating added value (knowledge transfer (Pusa & Haapalainen, 2012), problem solving (Kim, 2009;Jeong et al, 2009), and development of tools (Reina et al, 2012)...). In this proposed process model, skills brought by the stakeholders (inputs) are using the methods and tools to realize a number of activities and to provide results (outputs).…”

“…The overall objective of this study is to better understand how location-aware information systems impact the core services offered by a hospital. In addition to the supply chain context, there is recent literature suggesting that RFID-enabled location-aware systems can be effective in other contexts, such as healthcare (Janz, Pitts, & Otondo, 2005;Jeong, Cheng, & Prabhu, 2009;Lee & Shim, 2007;Lee, Fiedler, & Smith, 2008). Hospitals and the health care industry in general represent an area that is embracing IT to improve efficiencies and effectiveness.…”

“…One notable exception in this area is Osmani, Balasubramaniam, and Botvich (2008) who describe pervasive health care and the role of various communications technology in supporting activity recognition within a hospital environment. In a similar vein, Jeong et al (2009) propose a workflow and reliability model for surgery patient identification using RFID to ensure that both the correct patient and the correct surgery site are identified. We contribute to the overall understanding of RFID adoption by using a qualitative, case-based approach.…”

“…IT solutions have been adopted in most of health care institution in Thailand and patient data exchange has been standardized (Wall, 2009). Byungho, Cheng, and Prabhu (2009) presented a usage of RFID in the patient identification for a surgery. With the help of RFID and information technology, the error in patient identification can be reduced.…”
